Research output from Indian medical universities is very poor.  As per a report in the journal 'Current Medicine Research and Practice' published by Sir Gangaram Hospital, only 25 institutions produced more than 100 papers per year.  332 medical colleges did not have a single paper to publish during this period. The Health Ministry shared this appaling finding in the Lok Sabha during this monsoon session.

AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, CMC Vellore and SGPGIMS Lucknow are the four colleges from amongst the top 10 under MCI in terms of their research output.

A journal authored by Samiran Nundy, Dean of the Ganga Ram Institute for Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (GRIPMER), says "There are 579 medical institutes in the government and private sectors. (A total of) 316 institutes are under the MCI and 263 under the NBE. Their total research output during the period 2005-2014 was 101,034 papers, with the average number of publications per institution being 14.5 papers per year."

While Assam, Chhattisgarh and Goa did well, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are among the states, besides others, from where no research papers were published.
